A visit to Ayvalik, Turkey reveals the homeland of our paternal grandfather. We learn the attitudes of current Turkish residents, friendly people who value their historic Greek buildings but are disinterested in examining the history implied by this once entirely Greek-Ottoman city.
The background of our "Greek-American" family — our ancestors did not actually come from Greece. They are descendants of the Asia Minor Greek Christian diaspora. DNA tests linking our family’s genes to current Asia Minor populations reveal that they have much more in common with people living in present day Turkey than people living in Greece. The family responds to this finding with humor and reflection.
